While the aesthetic of the Sky-Dweller makes it unique, what truly sets it apart is its functionality. The inventive complication allows three distinct features to display on the dial, including local time, reference time or home time, and an annual calendar. First, the local time is displayed on the central axis with standard hour, minute, and second hands. Then, instead of using a typical GMT hand and 24-hour bezel to display the second time zone (reference time or home time), the Sky-Dweller employs a subdial. The subdial displays the reference time with a red arrow that points to the time on a 24-hour scale. The third and final element of the complication is its annual calendar function. The Rolex Sky-Dweller features a date window at the standard three o’clock position and 12 small apertures around the dial to display the month.

Unsurprisingly, the Sky-Dweller is powered by an all-new movement designed specifically for the model: the Caliber 9001. It’s one of the brand’s most complex movements, boasting COSC certification and a 72-hour power reserve. Although the original Sky-Dweller was only available in precious metals, it is now available in new variations, including stainless steel in 2017. This has made the model more accessible to all watch aficionados and Rolex fans.
